My Favourite Mac Nude Lipcolours...

As a big fan of the 'nude lip'...I can't tell you how many Mac Nude lipsticks I have in my kit!!!

I came to this realisation yesterday on a photo shoot...For the look I was creating I wanted a Matt texture with just the right amount of peach - Mac 'Kinda sexy' was the one!

Here are few other Favorites;

'Myth' lipstick is a satiny smooth, fleshy beige shade. Good for toned-down lips, especially when paired with dark smoky eyes. Celeb Demi Moore favours this one.

'Honeylove' lipstick is one of my favorites for a matte, nude-pink lip. It’s a great way to pair with heavier or more colorful eyes.

'Blankety' lipstick is an incredibly creamy, pigmented pink beige nude shade. This is a great color to pair with more pigmented, brighter lip glosses, too.

'Hug Me' lipstick is a fleshy pink-nude, but for those who find most nudes wash them out, 'Hug Me' is a great way to go for a muted lip instead.

'Creme d’Nude' lipstick is a creamy, opaque beige-nude shade that works great if you like a barely there/concealer look.

Can't find a shade? Best to try a few...nudes vary in tone from brown to peach to pink, so there is a flattering shade out therefor everyone.

Part of being a good Make-up Artist is understanding a client's skin type and being able to prepare the skin accordingly, ensuring that it's at it's best before the make-up goes on. Knowing a client's skin helps a Make-up Artist decide what make-up products to use. I always find if the skin is prepped properly the make-up glides on and lasts better. Hasselblad Victor Magazine - Hair, make-up & styling

It's not everyday you get invited to spend your working days on a Yacht! Here are some shots from a shoot I did for Hasselblad Victor Magazine late last summer on location in Majorca.

For the styling, the brief was to create relaxed but high-end looks with a stylish, luxury feel to the clothes.

Model Jolie wore silk shirts in olive green, sheer print maxi-dresses and a selection of Kaftan's...not forgetting the swimwear in classic black and bold turquoise and coral.

For the make-up, Mac's face and body foundation and mineralise powder gave Jolie's skin a beautiful healthy glow with bronzer and a rich peachy blusher on the cheeks. Rich olive greens and warm bronzes were used on the eyes. With the hot Mallorcan sun, lets not forget the Clinique SPF factor 40 as a base!

Hair was loosely curled and backcombed to create a soft sexy feel and slicked back for the 'taking a dip in the sea' shots (as featured above)...

Martha my dear...

I've always been fascinated by the 1950's and 60's and there is alot of influence from those decades in my work.
When I met our model, Martha, it was almost like i had transported her back there by creating the biggest bee-hive ever and make-up look straight out of 'Mad Men'!

I kept the look Matt using the fabulous Airbase foundation which evened out Martha's skin tone.
Instead of a mid-sixties 'twiggy ' look i went for a more 50's influenced eye with winged liquid liner on the top lash line and shading in the sockets with a taupe matt shadow. False lashes were applied and the eyebrows were defined with powder to create a 50's arched shape.
Definition was added to the face with sculpting under the cheekbones using a matt bronzer and bright coral on the cheekbones, I used Chanel's Limited edition Summer coral pallete.

To finish Lips were then painted a soft lilac shade which contrasts really well with the vintage pink 60's dress and soft yellow and pink Peonies.

When a Beehive is concerned, Bigger is better! Lots of backcombing, ton's of hairspray and hair padding were used to create this look as well as (what seemed like) hundreds of hair pins!
It was finished off with a vintage crotchet hair band and hair accessories were changed throughout the shoot...

I could'nt resist using a deep matt red lipstick on Martha it looked amazing on her english rose skin-tone...

We then finshed with classic nude-lips which brought the look up to date keeping eyes dark and winged...

The location worked perfectly with Photographer Helen http://www.helenroscoe.com/ and her assistant Dave http://www.burntpixel.co.uk/ using vintage props and sets built outdoors to create quirky backdrops that suited the feel of the shoot. Many Thanks to Emily who supplied us with wardrobe and such an amazing collection of vintage outfits and accessories.

Natural Beauty - All in the name of Art!

If you've ever had a bad store makeover and felt literally caked in make-up, spare a thought for model Hannelore Knuts who sat for nine hours while Dutch video artists Lernert and Sander slathered a year's worth of make-up on her face, all in the name of art. In the clip, called Natural Beauty, seven bottles of foundation, three lipsticks, two bottles of blush and two bottles of eye make-up were applied to revolting effect!
(Just so you know guy's...I am very light handed with my make-up and tools!)

RankinLive...Still going strong!

I can't believe we are now in July 2011!

Time flies when you are having fun...it's 2 years since I had the fantastic experience of working with Rankin as a member of the 'Glam Squad' in Liverpool in 2009, a project where 1500 Brits in 20 days expressed themselves in front of Rankin's camera (including myself!) and hung on the wall next to the Queen, Madonna, David Bowie and Kate Moss. This June 2011, Rankin Live goes to New York!

After the huge success of the London show, Rankin Live will take place on 1st-5th June 2011 in New York, at Milk Gallery (450 West 15th Street, number 800, New York, NY 10011-7057, USA). Rankin and his team will photograph as many as four people an hour in the gallery space. From the fire of the shutter, the images will be projected onto the wall, retouched, printed and hung as part of an evolving exhibition in a matter of fifteen minutes - showcasing the latest in photographic technology. Rankin is calling for all New Yorkers who have enthusiasm, original style and the personality to match, to come and be photographed. This is an exclusive opportunity to feature in front of a lens that has shot the likes of George Clooney, Grace Jones, The Rolling Stones, Jay-Z and countless others.

Back in early January I was approached by Julia Harrison of 'Go Glorious Wedding Styling' to collaborate on an editorial bridal shoot at Whirlowbrook Hall, Sheffield...but this was just not any bridal shoot!

The shoot took on an old English feel using Whirlobrook hall, Sheffield (built in 1906) as a stunning backdrop - the beautiful bedrooms,the main hall, staircase and the grounds.

Vintage Bridal looks were inspired from 1910, 1920's, 1940's and 1950's.
Thanks to our lovely models -Lauren, Hannah, Hannah and Rose - young and fresh faced with an editorial look we were after.

Vintage Make-up looks...

I took make-up inspiration from each era and worked from a mood board that had been put together giving traditional looks for each era. I loved doing each one and went for a more contemporary feel to lend the looks to the style of dresses and photography.

The base used for each model was created with high definition Airbase Airbrush make-up http://www.airbasemakeup.com/ for a flawless finish with 4-5 individual eyelashes applied on the corners of the eyes alongside black eyeliner on the lash line for the 1940's and 1950's looks.
For the 1920's I created a soft smokey eye in brown, with dark red lips to start with followed by a softer nude lipstick later in the day.

Hair styled by Jam hair Salon (0114 2302894) on Oakbrook Road, Sheffield who came in on the their day off just to style the girls hair, keeping the hairstyles in with the vintage theme and each specific era.

All the dresses were vintage inspired and loaned to us from Freya Bridal, Sheffield and they also provided all the amazing hair accessories for the day. http://www.freyabridal.co.uk/

As well as organising the whole shoot, Julia Harrison at 'Go Glorious' created table settings with a vintage feel using Royal Albert's 'Old Country Roses' Old English china. Alongside gold pearls, lace cloth and antique furniture. Traditional Old English styling with a romantic twist.

...Some models are not conventionally pretty but have a cool quirkiness about them.
Hirschy is one of them! The black Paper Self lashes and muted pinks worked well on her eyes and really contrasted next to naturally pale skin tone.

As we now are at the end of January (yeh!) and approaching Valentines Day (!) many professionals in the Wedding Industry are working on collaborative submissions to showcase their work in various publications and editorials for spring.
Going back to November 2010 (Before the heavy snow came and when I could still get out of my villiage!) I worked with a lovely and talented set of individuals to put together a magazine and blog submission and a rather nice set of photograph's to showcase our work...

I have just discovered the most amazing eyelashes!

Made by Paperself these are the most delicate, intricately designed eyelashes you will ever see.

Inspired by the art of chinese paper-cutting, these eyelashes blend a mixture of traditional culture and contemporary design.

I recently used these on a photo shoot and they were very different to work with - light as a feather and extremely delicate!

1970's Chic...

Here are some images from a recent editorial/ lifestyle shoot.

The shoot took place on a beautiful typically breezy autumn day in a retro location - a house built in late 1968, hidden away in woodland.

Taking influence from a rich palette of browns, camel, mulberry, and orange and using Mac make-up, the base was kept sheer with eyes in camel shades, using individual lashes and black to emphasis the lash line. Shading was used high on the cheek bones in a warm brown, using lipstick shades of matt peach and bright retro orange.

Styling was kept strictly 1970's with silk pussycat bow blouses, brown leather skirts and khaki jumpsuits...accessorised with wedge shoes, chunky brown and gold bracelets and statement rings.

Here are a few images from POSED magazine...the shoot itself took inspiration from the theme of Colour and child-like playfulness with lots of texture and fabric to create volume and mess!
Taking my inspiration from the 90's rave scene...Bright block colours of yellow, green and turquoise were used on the eye area with strong black liquid eyeliner flicked out at the corners. Cream blusher in bright luminous coral was used high on the cheekbones with lips kept nude to draw emphasis to the eyes.

It's all child's play really!

It's been a while since I've had a chance to do any make-up work with different mediums and glitter represented a bit of a challenge for me!

Using products from Topshop's New make-up range www.topshop.com which was launched this Summer - I used a selection of gold shadow's, silver and gold glitter and lashes from the fantastic 'Girls aloud' limited edition Festival collection found at www.superdrug.com

To compliment the look used a gold highlighter on the cheeks and hints of gold shimmer mixed with nude tones on the lips.

It's lovely to see the finished shots when you have worked as part of a team with a really strong idea.
These new lingerie & beauty shots were inspired by 70's Danish furniture and styled with nude lace, leopard print and vintage.
Greta's hair was styled big(...set in rollers first and then backcombed and smoothed out at the crown) to create a lux feel.
Make-up was brought up to date with black kohl lined eyes, gold tones and nude lips.

'Lost in a Daydream'

Here are some shots from a recent shoot I worked on with Photographer Helen kirkbright and new face Cailin.

With a love for vintage and all things girly, we went for a cute 1960's feel as we felt this would suit Cailin's look perfectly.

On one of the hottest days of the year so far, we managed to capture the late afternoon sunshine and hazy air...

Working with soft daylight gives a serene and dreamlike feel to the shots, and the sixties inspired make-up really opens the eyes!

To achieve this I used top & bottom eyelashes, black liquid eyeliner on the top lashline and white shimmer base on eyes with dark grey shading on the socketline. Cheeks were defined with a soft warm blusher and lips were kept fresh with a nude/pink lipstick.

Muscle & Fitness Magazine -Gladiators shoot - Enigma & Doom

Towards the end of 2009 I worked on a shoot with Photographer Helen Roscoe featuring Jenny and Wayne...aka 'Enigma and Doom' from the recent Sky 1 series of 'The Gladiators'.

Established firmly within the fitness industry they are sponsored by numerous nutrition companies, Sweaty Betty and Aasics to name a few!

Jenny(aka Enigma) wanted to show that super fit girls can still be sexy...
We certainly achieved this by heavily backcombing her hair, creating dark smokey eyes and rouge noir lips!...She even managed a few shots in a stilettos wearing a black two piece from American Apparrel!

Last week I had the opportunity to visit Liverpool (Fab City!) and work with

Over the past week I have had the pleasure of working with Fashion & Beauty photographer Mark Enstone. Check out his fantastic portfolio at www.enstone.net

We worked with Model Helen William (Boss) who was looking to update her model portfolio.
Working originally in digital colour these were then edited to Black and white.
For these shots I worked on light/dark shading techniques that really enhance Helen's bone structure whilst keeping the skin slightly dewy with mac strobe cream as a base. Eyebrows were darkened & defined to give an edgier look to her face and her lips were 'nuded' down with concealer.

Welcome to my Blog!

My work is varied and takes me all over the place, looking back over the past year I have made some amazing new contacts with like-minded creatives - photographers, models, stylists and designers and I'd like to share it!

The most exciting part of creating an image is teamwork...taking a theme and bringing it to life.

We have been shooting a fantastic range of bridal wear accessories for an exciting new Internet based company called Liberty in love www.libertyinlove.co.uk due to launch on 5th April!

The models hair was styled to look big, with lot's of backcombing at the crown -loose curls and sweeping fringes to showcase the hairpieces.
I used Mac skinfinish mineral Make-up to create soft, glowing skin with dark smokey eyes and nude lips....
